Two counties, two probate courts
The Chagrin Valley sits across a county line, which matters when an estate is settled. Communities such as Gates Mills, Moreland Hills, Bentleyville, and the village of Chagrin Falls fall in Cuyahoga County, where probate runs through the Cuyahoga County Probate Court in Cleveland under R.C. Chapter 2113. Others, including parts of Hunting Valley and the communities to the east, fall in Geauga County, where probate runs through the Geauga County Probate Court in Chardon. A Valley estate left in an individual’s name is administered publicly through whichever court holds jurisdiction, and a large, land-heavy estate is the kind that makes that process long and exposed. A funded living trust, transfer-on-death designations under R.C. § 5302.22, and coordinated beneficiary designations keep most of an estate out of either court and off the public record.
